A performance staged inside a limestone cave, with a banquet, built to fit a cruise ship's port call.

Dragon Pearl Cave is a natural cavern fitted out as a theatre. The show draws on the legend that gives the bay its name: a mother dragon sent down to defend Vietnam from invaders, spitting jade and pearl that hardened into the islands still standing in the water outside. Ha Long means descending dragon, and this is where that story is told.

What makes it work is the room. Limestone caverns have acoustics that no built theatre reproduces, and the rock is lit rather than hidden, so the cave is part of the staging instead of a venue.

A banquet follows, served either as lunch or dinner depending on your sailing.

Four and a half hours with round-trip transfer between the cave and Halong International Port is built around a ship's schedule. If you are on a cruise call and want something that is not another boat, this is the counter-programme: you have already seen the bay from the water, and this is the same bay's story from inside the rock it is made of.
