This is a 3-hour experience in Hanoi, built around Hanoi Old Quarter. It is run by Crossing Vietnam Tour, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Japanese food tours work because the best places are small, unmarked and full of regulars, and a guide who orders for you opens them. An izakaya crawl covers yakitori, sashimi, karaage and the local pours of sake, shochu and highballs across three or four counters in an evening; a ramen walk explains the broths, tonkotsu, shoyu, miso and shio, and the regional styles. Most places seat eight to twelve and tours run six to eight guests for that reason. Vegetarians should say so when booking, because dashi stock is fish and hidden in almost everything; halal-certified options exist but are fewer.

Devin was a fantastic tour guide. He was friendly, his English is impeccable, and he was very happy to give a locals perspective on life and food in Hanoi. He made navigating the streets of Hanoi a breeze, allowing us to thoroughly immerse ourselves in the experience. The egg coffee was hands down the best one we’ve had in all of Vietnam. 10/10, would highly recommend this tour.

Our guide was really attentive and knowledgeable, and the food was amazing! we did it at a bad time, as Hanoi was suffering floods, but the options were kept flexible so that we could still have the full experience. Our only comment would be that we were expecting something more personalble given that it was a private tour, but we were going to many of the places that group tours were also going following the schedule. If we did something like this again, we would probably do it in a group
