This is a 2-day experience in Sapa. It is run by Lantern Travel, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Japan's outdoors is organised: trails are marked, mountain huts are booked, and the walking routes with history, the Nakasendo post road between Magome and Tsumago and the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage in Wakayama, are done in comfortable day stages with luggage forwarded. Cycling tours use the flat river paths and back streets that cars avoid. The summer heat from July to September makes early starts essential in the cities and lowlands, while the mountains are cool. Winter turns Hokkaido and Nagano into ski country from December to March, with the powder that Niseko and Hakuba are known for.

Good overall. The best part was the trek itself and the village. The hotel staff were lovely. They did have an electricity cut early hours through to morning meaning no shower etc.. good location though. Market across the road was lively and worth visiting. Sleeper coach on way back was much lower standard than going (but actually more comfortable) and I did have to make my way back from the drop off point to my hotel. Regardless of this, the highlight was the trek in Sapa - beautiful people and though a few members of the group I’d been put in found the trek difficult and gave up after less t
