Cycling tours use the flat river paths and back streets that cars avoid. The summer heat from July to September makes early starts essential in the cities and lowlands, while the mountains are cool. Winter turns Hokkaido and Nagano into ski country from December to March, with the powder that Niseko and Hakuba are known for.

The waterfalls are beautiful, few stairs but that’s Vietnam. Best spring rolls at lunch. Loved the bamboo forest.
