Japan's outdoors is organised: trails are marked, mountain huts are booked, and the walking routes with history, the Nakasendo post road between Magome and Tsumago and the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage in Wakayama, are done in comfortable day stages with luggage forwarded. Cycling tours use the flat river paths and back streets that cars avoid. The summer heat from July to September makes early starts essential in the cities and lowlands, while the mountains are cool. Winter turns Hokkaido and Nagano into ski country from December to March, with the powder that Niseko and Hakuba are known for.

Had a great time hiking Fansipan up and down in a day. Although a challenging hike for many, I was grateful to have Trung there. Without the tasty lunch he prepared and cooked at the 2800m hut, I’m not sure I would have had the energy to complete the hike in the time I had available (total hiking time under 7 hours). Organisation and communication via WhatsApp was clear and prompt. On the way up he showed videos from the sunrise group that day, giving the motivation to get up to the summit as soon as possible.
