04:30

Hotel pickup

A very early start is deliberate. It gets you onto Sigiriya before the heat and the tour buses.

08:30

Sigiriya water gardens

Enter through the symmetrical water gardens and boulder gardens at the base of the rock.

09:15

Frescoes and mirror wall

A spiral stair leads to the sheltered gallery of rock paintings, then along the polished mirror wall covered in verses left by visitors over a thousand years.

10:00

Lion terrace and summit

The giant carved paws mark the old gateway. From here open staircases climb to the palace foundations and the view over the plain.

11:30

Descent

Back down at your own pace with time at the base for water and shade.

12:30

Lunch

An hour at a local restaurant.

Great world heritage sites. The structure and the landscape were amazing. Great urban design which we can’t see anywhere in the world. The driver was friendly & both guides were very knowledgeable to explain much about Sigiriya and caves. Highly recommended.

Häufige Fragen

Hotel pickup in Colombo or the surrounding area, confirmed after booking.
The price does not cover sigiriya and dambulla entrance tickets; drinks; gratuities; personal expenses; site guide fees at sigiriya if you hire one.. Everything it does cover is listed in full on this page, so if something is not on that list, budget for it separately.
Religious sites expect shoulders and knees covered, and shoes come off before entering many of them. A light scarf is worth carrying. Where a site enforces this at the gate, arriving dressed correctly saves the whole group time.
Bentota Travel Mart. We book with them directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can confirm your place with the operator before taking it as final.
We confirm your booking with the operator before we treat it as final, and we need at least one day's notice outside India. Once it is confirmed you get the meeting point, the time and a contact number for the day. If the operator cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Roughly 1,200 steps, about 180 m above the plain, with handrails the whole way. Entry is around USD 30-35 for foreign adults — one of South Asia's priciest tickets — paid in cash. Climb at the 7am opening: there is no shade above the frescoes. Full detail in our Sigiriya rock guide.
It is cheaper and has the better view — of Sigiriya. What it does not have is the water gardens, frescoes, mirror wall, lion's paws or summit palace. For the photograph, take Pidurangala. For the site, take Sigiriya. Compared properly in our Sigiriya rock guide.
Roughly June to September, peaking in August, when the shrinking reservoir exposes fresh grass and several hundred elephants converge. Outside those months the herds disperse and you get a normal safari. Operators switch between Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu depending on where the herds are — that is them doing their job. See our Minneriya gathering guide.
Five caves under one granite overhang, in continuous use since the 1st century BC, holding around 150 Buddha images and 2,100 m² of painting. The approach is a steep 15-minute climb; shoes come off at the top terrace, so bring socks. See the Dambulla cave temple guide.
Polonnaruwa if you have one morning — compact, cyclable in three hours, and the Gal Vihara is the finest sculpture in the country. Anuradhapura if you have a full day and an interest in living Buddhism; it is a thousand years older and still an active pilgrimage city. See Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura.
Sigiriya is in the dry zone and follows the *northeast* monsoon — its wet season is October to January, the opposite of Colombo. Best months are May to September, which is also the elephant Gathering. See best time to visit Sigiriya.
Two nights in Sigiriya, Dambulla or Habarana. Day 1: the rock at 7am, Dambulla late morning, a 3pm safari. Day 2: Polonnaruwa by bicycle or Pidurangala at sunrise. Our Sigiriya 2-day itinerary sets out the order and why it matters.
December to March is the driest stretch. Colombo sits on the west coast, so it gets the southwest monsoon roughly May to September — the northeast monsoon (October to January) hits the *other* side of the island instead. Any guide describing one national "rainy season" is only describing half the country. Full breakdown in our best time to visit Colombo guide.
Tuk-tuks are everywhere — insist on the meter or agree the fare first. PickMe is the local ride-hailing app and usually cheaper than flagging one down, with no fare argument. The coastal railway south toward Galle runs along the sea and costs very little. See getting around Colombo.
Rice and curry is the everyday meal, not a dish — rice with several curries and sambols. Kottu roti is chopped roti cooked with a distinctive clanging rhythm on the griddle, hoppers are bowl-shaped fermented rice-flour pancakes, and lamprais is the Dutch Burgher dish baked in a banana leaf. See the Colombo food guide.
Pettah is the market district east of Fort, and its streets are organised by trade — one for electronics, one for textiles, one for hardware, one for spices. The candy-striped Red Mosque (Jami Ul-Alfar, 1908) is the landmark. Street-by-street in our Pettah market guide.
Galle is the easiest — about 2 hours on the southern expressway. Kandy is only 115 km but 3-4 hours each way on a mountain road. Sigiriya is realistically a 12-14 hour day and is better as an overnight. Honest distances in our day trips from Colombo guide.
Two days covers it comfortably. Colombo is not a museum city and most travellers pass through on the way somewhere else — our Colombo 2-day itinerary sets out a realistic pair of days.
