Two Days in Sigiriya: Rock, Caves, Ruins and a Safari, in the Right Order
The cultural triangle is usually done as a day trip from Kandy or Colombo, which means a 3am or 5am departure and a rushed climb. Two nights in Sigiriya itself costs one extra hotel night and changes the trip completely.
Everything here is close: Dambulla is fifteen minutes away, Pidurangala is one kilometre, Polonnaruwa is an hour, Minneriya is thirty minutes, and Anuradhapura is ninety. The whole of Sri Lanka's ancient heartland fits inside a small circle, which is why staying inside it works so well.
The plan below is built around temperature rather than distance. The rock at 7am because there is no shade on it. Dambulla late morning because the caves are cool. Nothing strenuous between eleven and three. The safari at 3pm because that is when the elephants come to water.
Get the order right and two days here is comfortable. Get it wrong and it is a hot, expensive slog.
