Ella nach Nuwara Eliya ist nur etwa zwei Stunden Fahrt, was es zum einfachsten Umzug im Hochland macht und dem, der sich am meisten mit Stopps lohnt.

Die Strasse steigt neunhundert Meter, und der Charakter aendert sich damit: Ella auf tausend Metern ist warm, etwas schmuddelig, und voller Wanderer, und Nuwara Eliya auf 1.900 ist kalt, formell, und britisch gebaut, mit einer Pferderennbahn, einem Golfplatz, und einem Postamt im Tudor-Imitationsstil.

Der Seetha-Amman-Tempel in Seetha Eliya ist der erste richtige Stopp. Er markiert das Tal, in dem Sita angeblich von Ravana festgehalten wurde, und es gibt Vertiefungen im Felsen jenseits des Baches, die als Hanumans Fussspuren bezeichnet werden. Er ist in leuchtenden suedindischen Farben bemalt und wird von indischen Pilgern besucht statt von auslaendischen Touristen, was ihm eine ganz andere Atmosphaere verleiht als die buddhistischen Staetten.

Hakgala, gleich daneben, ist der zweite der grossen botanischen Gaerten Sri Lankas nach Peradeniya. Er wurde 1861 angelegt, um Chinarindenbaeume fuer Chinin und spaeter Tee anzubauen, und auf 1.700 Metern waechst dort, was das Tiefland nicht kann: Rosen, Baumfarne, Zypressen, und eine grosse Orchideensammlung. Die blauen Elstern hier kommen zu den Besuchern.
