Tissamaharama, fuer alle, die dorthin fahren, Tissa, ist die Stadt, die den Yala-Nationalpark versorgt, und die meisten Leute kommen am Abend vor einer Pirschfahrt im Morgengrauen an. Von Ella aus dauert die Fahrt dorthin etwa drei Stunden, und die Strasse faellt vom Uva-Steilhang durch einige der schoensten Landschaften des Sueden.

Die Ravana-Wasserfaelle sind der erste Stopp, eine breite 25-Meter-Kaskade an der Strasse unterhalb von Ella. Diyaluma folgt, Sri Lankas zweithoechster mit 220 Metern, vollstaendig von der Strasse aus sichtbar.

Buduruwagala ist der Grund, diese Route statt der direkten zu nehmen. Sieben Figuren, im neunten oder zehnten Jahrhundert in eine Felswand gehauen, der zentrale stehende Buddha sechzehn Meter hoch, mit Spuren des urspruenglichen Stucks und der orangenen Farbe noch auf dem Stein sichtbar. Es ist eine Mahayana-Staette, selten in einem Theravada-Land, und steht in trockenem Buschwerk fast ohne Menschen.

Ein Gewuerzgarten bei Wellawaya umfasst Zimt, Pfeffer und die ayurvedischen Pflanzen, die in jedem Dorf hier verwendet werden.

Tissa selbst hat einen alten Stausee und eine grosse Dagoba, und Sie kommen am Nachmittag an mit Zeit, sich vor einem Safari-Start um 4:30 Uhr einzurichten.

Die Morgen sind klar, und an Nachmittagen der feuchten Monate zieht Wolken in den Pass, deshalb finden Wanderungen frueh statt.
