Dies ist die preiswerte Version des Ella-Tages und deckt die meisten Sehenswuerdigkeiten der Stadt ab, ohne den Start vor Tagesanbruch, den die Wandertouren brauchen.

Das Mahameunawa Asapuwa ist der Stopp, den niemand erwartet. Es ist ein Waldkloster statt ein geschmueckter Tempel, ruhig, schlicht und wirklich in Gebrauch, und nach einer Woche bemalter buddhistischer Staetten wirkt das ganz anders.

Ellas Gewuerzgarten umfasst Zimt, Pfeffer, Kardamom, Kurkuma und die ayurvedischen Pflanzen, die in jedem Dorfgarten dieser Gegend wachsen. Sri Lanka produziert den grossten Teil des echten Zimts der Welt, und der Unterschied zwischen ihm und der Cassia, die anderswo als Zimt verkauft wird, wird offensichtlich, sobald jemand Ihnen beide zeigt.

Die Neun-Bogen-Bruecke ist das Herzstueck: 91 Meter Stein, 24 Meter ueber einer Schlucht, errichtet waehrend des Ersten Weltkriegs ohne Stahl, weil der Stahl fuer Europa requiriert wurde.

Die Ravana-Wasserfaelle, eine breite Kaskade an der Strasse nach Sueden, und die Flying-Ravana-Zipline ueber dem Tal schliessen den Tag ab.

Was dies nicht enthaelt, sind Little Adam’s Peak oder Ella Rock. Wenn Sie die Wanderungen wollen, nehmen Sie einen vollen Tag mit frueher Abfahrt.

Ella ist ein Dorf auf 1.040 Metern in den Bergen des Sueden, erreichbar mit dem Zug aus Kandy, den die meisten fuer die schoenste Bahnfahrt Asiens halten, und seine Sehenswuerdigkeiten liegen alle nur wenige Kilometer entfernt: die Neun-Bogen-Bruecke, ein Backsteinviadukt von 1921 in einer Teeschlucht, das mehrmals taeglich von einem Zug ueberquert wird; der Little Adam’s Peak, ein 40-minuetiger Spaziergang durch Teefelder zu einem Kamm; Ella Rock, ein anspruchsvollerer dreistuendiger Aufstieg; und die Ravana-Wasserfaelle an der Strasse nach Wellawaya. Die Morgen sind klar, und an Nachmittagen der feuchten Monate zieht Wolken in den Pass, deshalb finden Wanderungen frueh statt. Tuk-Tuks sind das Verkehrsmittel, und jede Pension kann eines besorgen.
