Dieser Tag basiert auf der Beobachtung, dass das Teeland am besten von einem Zug aus zu sehen und am besten mit einem Tuk-Tuk zu erreichen ist, und nutzt jedes fuer das, was es am besten kann.

Die Zugetappe von Ella nach Haputale ist kurz, unter einer Stunde, deckt aber einen der besseren Abschnitte der Bergbahn ab, verlaeuft entlang der Hoehenlinien mit dem Uva-Tal, das darunter abfaellt. Anders als die lange Nanu-Oya-Strecke ist es leicht, hier einen Sitzplatz zu bekommen, und es frisst nicht den ganzen Tag.

Von Haputale aus steigt ein Tuk-Tuk die Plantagenstrasse hinauf zu Lipton’s Seat, auf etwa 1.970 Metern. Thomas Lipton kaufte seine ersten Ceylon-Plantagen 1890 und ritt, so die Geschichte, zu diesem Felsvorsprung hinauf, um alles zu betrachten, was er besass; an einem klaren Tag reicht die Sicht ueber fuenf Provinzen. Die Strasse hinauf ist schmal, steil und voller Serpentinen, und ein offenes Tuk-Tuk darauf ist der Sinn, nicht ein Kompromiss.

Dambatenne, die von Lipton errichtete Fabrik, liegt auf dem Rueckweg und ist eine der aeltesten noch aktiven Fabriken des Landes. Die Besichtigung folgt dem Blatt vom Welktrog bis zur Sortiertabelle.

Wolken schliessen die Sicht von Lipton’s Seat ueblicherweise gegen neun oder zehn Uhr, weshalb dieser Tag frueh beginnt.

Ella ist ein Dorf auf 1.040 Metern in den Bergen des Sueden, erreichbar mit dem Zug aus Kandy, den die meisten fuer die schoenste Bahnfahrt Asiens halten, und seine Sehenswuerdigkeiten liegen alle nur wenige Kilometer entfernt: die Neun-Bogen-Bruecke, ein Backsteinviadukt von 1921 in einer Teeschlucht, das mehrmals taeglich von einem Zug ueberquert wird; der Little Adam’s Peak, ein 40-minuetiger Spaziergang durch Teefelder zu einem Kamm; Ella Rock, ein anspruchsvollerer dreistuendiger Aufstieg; und die Ravana-Wasserfaelle an der Strasse nach Wellawaya. Die Morgen sind klar, und an Nachmittagen der feuchten Monate zieht Wolken in den Pass, deshalb finden Wanderungen frueh statt. Tuk-Tuks sind das Verkehrsmittel, und jede Pension kann eines besorgen.
