Die Berge um Ella beherbergen zwei Glaubenstraditionen Seite an Seite, und zu verstehen, warum das so ist, ist interessanter, als eine von beiden zu fotografieren.

Die buddhistischen Staetten sind singhalesisch und alt. Das Mahameunawa Asapuwa oberhalb von Ella ist ein Waldkloster statt ein geschmueckter Tempel, ruhig, schlicht und wirklich in Gebrauch, was nach einer Woche bemalter Kultstaetten einen ganz anderen Eindruck macht. Der Dhowa-Felsentempel bei Bandarawela hat einen sechzehn Meter hohen stehenden Buddha, in eine Felswand gehauen, unvollendet, und Wandmalereien in einer kleinen Hoehle dahinter.

Die hinduistischen Staetten sind wegen des Ramayana und der Plantagen hier. Der Seetha-Amman-Tempel in Seetha Eliya markiert das Tal, in dem Sita angeblich von Ravana festgehalten wurde, und es gibt Vertiefungen im Fels auf der anderen Seite des Bachs, die als Hanumans Fussspuren bezeichnet werden. Er wird von indischen Pilgern besucht statt von Touristen. Die uebrigen Hindu-Tempel der Teedistrikte wurden von und fuer tamilische Plantagenarbeiter errichtet, die ab den 1830er-Jahren aus Suedindien gebracht wurden, und ihre Praesenz ist die sichtbare Spur dieser Geschichte.
