Die Strasse von Haputale hinauf zu Lipton’s Seat steigt durch die Dambatenne-Plantage auf einer schmalen Strasse mit ununterbrochenen Serpentinen, und es ist einer der wenigen Orte, an denen ein Tuk-Tuk wirklich das bessere Fahrzeug ist. Offen seitlich, langsam, und nah genug am Tee, dass man das Pfluecken an den Haengen neben sich sehen kann.

Lipton’s Seat liegt auf etwa 1.970 Metern. Thomas Lipton kaufte seine ersten Ceylon-Plantagen 1890 und ritt, so die Geschichte, zu diesem Felsvorsprung hinauf, um alles zu betrachten, was er besass. Es gibt eine Statue von ihm an der Spitze, hinausblickend. An einem klaren Morgen reicht die Sicht ueber fuenf Provinzen bis zur suedlichen Ebene.

Das entscheidende Wort ist Morgen. Wolken fuellen das Tal ueblicherweise gegen neun oder zehn Uhr, und dann gibt es ueberhaupt nichts mehr zu sehen, weshalb dies ein Ausflug vor Tagesanbruch ist und kein Ausschlafen.

Dambatenne, die von Lipton errichtete Fabrik, liegt auf dem Rueckweg und ist eine der aeltesten noch aktiven Fabriken Sri Lankas. Die Besichtigung folgt dem Blatt vom Welktrog ueber Rollen, Oxidation und Trocknen bis zur Sortiertabelle und endet mit einer Tasse.

Ella ist ein Dorf auf 1.040 Metern in den Bergen des Sueden, erreichbar mit dem Zug aus Kandy, den die meisten fuer die schoenste Bahnfahrt Asiens halten, und seine Sehenswuerdigkeiten liegen alle nur wenige Kilometer entfernt: die Neun-Bogen-Bruecke, ein Backsteinviadukt von 1921 in einer Teeschlucht, das mehrmals taeglich von einem Zug ueberquert wird; der Little Adam’s Peak, ein 40-minuetiger Spaziergang durch Teefelder zu einem Kamm; Ella Rock, ein anspruchsvollerer dreistuendiger Aufstieg; und die Ravana-Wasserfaelle an der Strasse nach Wellawaya. Die Morgen sind klar, und an Nachmittagen der feuchten Monate zieht Wolken in den Pass, deshalb finden Wanderungen frueh statt. Tuk-Tuks sind das Verkehrsmittel, und jede Pension kann eines besorgen.

We had a wonderful tour through the tea fields of Ella and to Lipton's Seat with Shad and his tuk-tuk. Shad let us experience the tea-making process. He showed us the plantations and stopped at a tea factory where we could watch the entire process from leaf to tea bag. Shad is a very pleasant guy, he drives carefully and even offered us a snack on the way back. Along the way, he stopped regularly to take beautiful photos of us. We had a great experience.
