Udawalawe liegt zwei Stunden suedlich von Ella und ist der Park, den man nehmen sollte, wenn man Elefanten sehen will, statt auf einen Leoparden zu wetten.

Er wurde 1972 angelegt, um das Einzugsgebiet eines neuen Reservoirs zu schuetzen, und das durch das Wasser verdraengte Ackerland wurde zu offenem Grasland. Das ist der ganze Grund, warum es funktioniert: es gibt nirgendwo fuer einen Elefanten, sich zu verstecken, die rund sechshundert ansaessigen Tiere sind normalerweise innerhalb von zwanzig Minuten nach dem Tor in Sicht, und Sichtungen sind fast sicher statt glueckbedingt. Yala, eine Stunde weiter, hat die Leoparden und dreihundert Jeeps dazu.

Neben den Elefanten: Wasserbueffel, Axishirsche, Goldschakale, Sumpfkrokodile am Reservoirrand, und wirklich gute Vogelbeobachtung, Schlangenadler, Wandelhabichte, Buntstoerche, und ein starker Winterzug.

Das Elefanten-Transitheim an der Parkgrenze ist ein Rehabilitationszentrum statt eines Waisenhauses, und der Unterschied ist wichtig. Verwaiste Kaelber werden mit minimalem Menschenkontakt aufgezogen und in Gruppen in die Wildnis entlassen; mehrere Hundert sind zurueckgekehrt. Die Fuetterung wird aus der Entfernung von einer Plattform beobachtet, ohne Reiten, ohne Baden, und ohne Kontakt.

Ella ist ein Dorf auf 1.040 Metern im suedlichen Hochland, erreicht durch den Zug von Kandy, den die meisten Menschen als die schoenste Bahnfahrt Asiens bewerten, und seine Sehenswuerdigkeiten liegen alle innerhalb wenigen Kilometern: die Nine-Arch-Bruecke, ein Backsteinviadukt von 1921 in einer Teeschlucht, die ein Zug mehrmals am Tag ueberquert; Little Adam's Peak, ein 40-minuetiger Spaziergang durch Tee zu einem Grat; Ella Rock, ein schwierigerer dreistuendiger Aufstieg; und die Ravana-Wasserfaelle auf der Strasse nach Wellawaya. Morgen sind klar und Nachmittage in den feuchten Monaten bringen Wolken in die Luecke, daher werden die Wanderungen frueh gemacht. Tuk-Tuks sind das Transportmittel, und jedes Gaestehaus kann eines finden.
