Die meisten Leute erreichen Udawalawe fuer eine Pirschfahrt im Morgengrauen und reisen am selben Tag weiter. Nordwaerts ins Bergland zu fahren bedeutet, von trockenem Tiefland-Buschwerk auf tausend Meter zu steigen, und diese Route legt die guten Stopps auf den Aufstieg statt geradeaus durchzufahren.

Buduruwagala ist jener Stopp, der die Route lohnend macht. Sieben Figuren, im neunten oder zehnten Jahrhundert in eine Felswand gehauen, der zentrale stehende Buddha sechzehn Meter hoch, mit Spuren des urspruenglichen Stucks und der orangenen Farbe noch auf dem Stein sichtbar. Es gehoert zur Mahayana-Tradition, die in einem ueberwiegend Theravada-Land selten ist, und steht in trockenem Buschwerk fast ohne Besucher, ein erheblicher Tempowechsel nach einem Vormittag voller Jeeps.

Ein Gewuerzgarten bei Wellawaya umfasst Zimt, Pfeffer, Kardamom und die ayurvedischen Pflanzen, die in jedem Dorf hier angebaut werden.

Diyaluma, mit 220 Metern der zweithoechste Wasserfall Sri Lankas, ist beim Aufstieg vollstaendig von der Strasse aus sichtbar, und die Ravana-Wasserfaelle kommen kurz unterhalb von Ella.

Die Morgen sind klar, und an Nachmittagen der feuchten Monate zieht Wolken in den Pass, deshalb finden Wanderungen frueh statt.
