Ambuluwawa ist das seltsamste Bauwerk Sri Lankas. Es ist eine 48 Meter hohe weisse Spitze auf einem Huegel oberhalb von Gampola, errichtet als multireligioeses Monument mit einer buddhistischen Stupa, einem Hindu-Kovil, einer Moschee und einer Kirche auf demselben Gelaende, und der Turm selbst wird nach oben schmaler, sodass die Treppe zu einer Spirale wird, die sich an der Aussenseite des Kegels entlangzieht.

Der Aufstieg ist kurz und wirklich beaengstigend. Die Stufen verengen sich nahe der Spitze auf etwa die Breite eines Fusses, und das Gelaender reicht bis zur Taille ohne etwas dahinter. Leute mit Hoehenangst sollten auf halbem Weg anhalten, und das ist keine Schande, die Aussicht von der Haelfte lohnt bereits den Ausflug.

Von der Spitze aus koennen Sie das Knuckles-Gebirge, die Huegel um Kandy sehen und, an einem klaren Tag, weit nach Sueden ins Teeland. Es ist eine 360-Grad-Aussicht von einem Punkt, der sich weit ueber alles in der Umgebung erhebt.

Die anschliessende Teefabrik ist das Gegengewicht: eine aktive Anlage, die das Blatt durch Welken, Rollen, Oxidation und Trocknen fuehrt, endend mit einer Verkostung. Zusammen ergeben sie einen halben statt einen ganzen Tag, was nuetzlich ist an einem Tag, an dem Sie auch Zeit in Kandy selbst wollen.

Kandy war die letzte Hauptstadt der singhalesischen Koenige und hielt gegen Portugiesen und Niederlaender durch, bis die Briten sie 1815 einnahmen, und der Tempel der Heiligen Zahnreliquie am See ist der Grund, warum sie wichtig ist: Die Reliquie, von der man glaubt, es sei ein Zahn des Buddha, ist das heiligste Objekt der Insel, und ihre Verwahrung legitimierte einst das Koenigtum. Die Reliquienkammer oeffnet dreimal taeglich fuer Puja, etwa um 5:30, 9:30 und 18:30 Uhr, wenn das Trommeln beginnt und die Schlange am Reliquienschrein vorbeizieht. Die Kleidung bedeckt Schultern und Knie, Schuhe werden am Eingang ausgezogen, und die Esala Perahera im Juli oder August fuehrt den Schrein auf einem Elefanten zehn Naechte lang durch die Stadt.

Our Guide(s) (one was a Trainee) we're very nice. they explained a lot of Things and the car was very comfortable and had got A/C. At Ambuluwawa we took a Tuk Tuk to the top. After the tower we headed to the tea factory which was also a nice experience. They would've drive with us to the other places as well, but it was enough for us. They even dropped us off at a good restaurant (because we wanted lunch) and would have even driven us back to the hotel afterwards. This was not needed from our side. All together a very nice experience and worth the money.
