Kandy is Sri Lanka's cultural heart — a UNESCO World Heritage city set around a tranquil lake and ringed by misty hills. It's home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism's most revered sites, and a living tradition of dance, craft and ceremony.
With a local guide you'll understand the significance behind the Temple of the Tooth, explore the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, catch a Kandyan cultural dance show, and use the city as the gateway to Sri Lanka's famous tea country and scenic hill-country train rides.

The best time to visit Kandy is from December to April, when the hill-country weather is driest. If you can, time your visit with the Esala Perahera festival (usually July/August) — a spectacular procession of dancers, drummers and decorated elephants.

The Temple of the Tooth is an active and deeply sacred site, so modest dress is required: shoulders and knees must be covered, and you'll need to remove your shoes and hats before entering. Wearing white is customary for worshippers but not required of visitors. A local guide will advise on timing your visit around the daily 'puja' (offering) ceremonies, when the inner chamber is opened.
Kandy is about 115 km from Colombo — roughly 3–3.5 hours by car, or one of the world's most scenic train journeys (around 2.5–3 hours). Many travelers visit Kandy as part of a multi-day cultural-triangle and hill-country itinerary; guided tours can include private transport and the train experience.
Yes — the nightly Kandyan dance shows feature traditional drumming, acrobatic dancing and a fire-walking finale, offering a vivid introduction to Sri Lankan performing arts. They're family-friendly and a great complement to a day of temple and garden visits.
