Das Knuckles-Gebirge ist nach der Art benannt, wie seine Gipfel von Kandy aus wie eine geballte Faust aussehen, und es ist einer der wenigen Orte in Sri Lanka, an denen man einen Tag wandern kann, ohne auf eine Reisegruppe zu treffen. Es ist ein UNESCO-gelistetes Schutzgebiet mit Hochlandnebelwald, Patana-Grasland und Arten, die nirgendwo sonst existieren, das Gebirge liegt am Treffpunkt der feuchten und trockenen Zone, weshalb sich die Vegetation beim Durchqueren so scharf aendert.

Die Wanderung steigt durch Tee und Sekundaerwald in den aelteren Wald darueber, wo die Baeume Moos und Epiphyten tragen und die Wolken fuer einen Grossteil des Vormittags in der Kronendecke liegen. Die Vogelbeobachtung ist hier gut und die endemischen Arten sind wirklich auffindbar: Gelbohr-Bulbul, Sri-Lanka-Brillenvogel, Dunkelblau-Schnaepper.

Perumal Ella ist der Wendepunkt, ein Wasserfall mit einem Becken an der Basis, kalt genug, um ein Schock zu sein, und flach genug, um darin zu sitzen. Die meisten Gruppen halten hier eine Stunde.

Das Mittagessen findet auf einem Bauernhof im Gebirge statt, Reis und Curry, dort gekocht, dort gegessen. Der Rueckweg folgt einer anderen Linie durch die Doerfer, sodass Sie den Vormittag nicht wiederholen.

Kandy war die letzte Hauptstadt der singhalesischen Koenige und hielt gegen Portugiesen und Niederlaender durch, bis die Briten sie 1815 einnahmen, und der Tempel der Heiligen Zahnreliquie am See ist der Grund, warum sie wichtig ist: Die Reliquie, von der man glaubt, es sei ein Zahn des Buddha, ist das heiligste Objekt der Insel, und ihre Verwahrung legitimierte einst das Koenigtum. Die Reliquienkammer oeffnet dreimal taeglich fuer Puja, etwa um 5:30, 9:30 und 18:30 Uhr, wenn das Trommeln beginnt und die Schlange am Reliquienschrein vorbeizieht. Die Kleidung bedeckt Schultern und Knie, Schuhe werden am Eingang ausgezogen, und die Esala Perahera im Juli oder August fuehrt den Schrein auf einem Elefanten zehn Naechte lang durch die Stadt.

A great combined experience of Sri Lankan mountain village life and a good mountain hike. The pick up was smooth and the guides were very friendly, attentive and local. The cooking experience was great fun and the lunch prepared by the host was excellent. The hike itself was great, rising above the rice paddies into montane forest, with an invigorating waterfall swimming spot towards the end. We enjoyed communicating with our affable guide despite the language differences and also experiencing their local knowledge in a slightly extended walk.
