Von Kandy nach Nuwara Eliya zu ziehen sind nur etwa achtzig Kilometer, aber die Strasse steigt auf fast zweitausend Meter und braucht den grossten Teil eines Vormittags dafuer. Statt das als tote Zeit zu behandeln, nutzt diese private Reise die Fahrt als Tagesausflug, dieselbe Strasse, aber mit den Stopps, die den Aufstieg lohnend machen.

Sie verlassen Kandy nach dem Fruehstueck und folgen der A5 nach Nordosten, wobei Sie beobachten, wie sich die Landschaft mit zunehmender Hoehe aendert. Dorfgaerten weichen dem Dschungel, dann den geschnittenen gruenen Teeterrassen. Bei Ramboda faellt der Wasserfall in Stufen neben der Strasse; es gibt einen Aussichtspunkt und, wenn das Wasser nach Regen hoch steht, viel Sprueh.

Weiter oben halten Sie an einer aktiven Teeplantage. Sri Lankas Berglandtee-Industrie geht auf die 1860er-Jahre zurueck, als Pflanzer eine zusammengebrochene Kaffeeernte durch Camellia ersetzten, und viel der Ausruestung in diesen Fabriken ist noch die urspruengliche britische Maschinerie. Sie sehen das Blatt auf langen Trogen welken, rollen, oxidieren und trocknen, und Sie enden mit einer Tasse der Sorte, die diese Linie verlaesst.

Nuwara Eliya selbst ist anders als alles sonst auf der Insel. Auf ueber 1.800 Metern gelegen, ist es nachts wirklich kalt, und die Stadt behielt ihre Bergstation-Knochen, einen Golfplatz, eine Pferderennbahn, Backstein- und Fachwerkgebaeude, und Hecken, die verpflanzt wirken. Der Gregory-See liegt an ihrem Rand mit einem Spazierweg darum.

Die Reise dauert etwa sechseinhalb Stunden Tuer zu Tuer und endet an Ihrem Hotel in Nuwara Eliya. Sie funktioniert gut als Reisetag zwischen dem Kulturdreieck und dem Bergland, und erspart Ihnen einen ueberfuellten Bus auf einer sehr kurvenreichen Strasse.

We had a wonderful journey from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya with our guide Saman and we can't recommend him enough. Saman is a very nice, friendly and cooperative person. From the beginning he was so flexible - he changed and adjusted the itinerary completely as we wanted, without any hesitation. That made our trip so comfortable and stress-free. On the way he took us to beautiful places like Ramboda Falls, which was breathtaking, a lovely tea plantation where we learned about the whole tea-making process, and the famous Nuwara Eliya Post Office and city tour. He knows all the best spots for photos

After a couple of hiccups (my fault) which our driver quickly resolved for me, the trip was great. the driver was polite and kind, no rushing g me as I am 70 years old. He helped me with steps which was appreciated. The scenery was very beautiful. I highly recommend this tour.

We had an excellent experience on the Kandy to Nuwara Eliya drop tour. The journey was comfortable, well organized, and filled with beautiful scenery along the way. Our driver Maresh was punctual, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the area. Had such a great experience on this trip. My guide Rumesh genuinely could not do enough for me, stopping at any time along the way when I asked, giving great tips and recommendations for my next destination and he even went out of his way to drop me to the Ambewela train station and waited with me until I got my ticket. He completely tailored the experience for me after finding out I had already done some of the tours that were on the route. This was the best tour we had in Sri Lanka! 😊 Our guide was extremely engaged, very knowledgeable, and genuinely kind - he truly went above and beyond for us. We did so many amazing things and visited wonderful places. We felt very well taken care of the whole time - everything was perfectly organized and stress-free. Lali our driver and guide took us to a number of different sights on our journey between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. He was very polite, courteous and thoughtful to our needs. We asked if he could tailor our trip slightly as we needed to get to our hotel earlyish. He also kept us informed about pick up and kept checking through the day that we were comfortable and what the next stops would be. Excellent driver and guide, would highly recommend for others doing this tour.

We highly recommend this tour! Our guide, Danushka, arrived early at the meeting point and waited for us. He adjusted the travel plan perfectly to our expectations and interests. During the day, we visited a Buddhist temple, a spice garden, a gem museum, a wood-carving workshop, a waterfall, tea plantations, and finally the post office in Nuwara Eliya. Our driver also helped us get to the bus to Ella at the end of the trip. At every stop, Danushka explained everything in detail and made sure we were comfortable and happy throughout the journey. The town sits at about 1,900 m and drops to around 10°C at night, and few hotels have heating. Horton Plains at 2,300 m regularly sits near freezing before dawn, with ground frost from December to February. Bring a genuine warm layer — most visitors underestimate this.
No — they close on poya days, the monthly full moon and a public holiday in Sri Lanka. If your free day is a poya, take an estate walk with a plucker instead. Plucking happens in the morning; by afternoon the slopes are empty.
Mostly leaf size, not quality. OP is a long wiry whole leaf, BOP is smaller and broken, and fannings and dust go into teabags because the higher surface area brews fast. Bigger leaf is slower tea, not better tea. Explained in our Ceylon tea guide.
At a factory, not a tourist shop. Factory shops carry the higher grades that never reach a visitor shelf; the boxed tea on the main streets is usually fannings at visitor prices.
Nanu Oya, about 10 km and a 20-30 minute drive from the town. Nuwara Eliya has no station of its own, and tuk-tuk fares at Nanu Oya rise sharply the moment a train arrives.
Time it for a puja — 5.30am, 9.30am or 6.30pm. Those are the only windows when the upper relic chamber opens and the hevisi drummers play; outside them you are visiting a beautiful building rather than a ceremony. February for the clearest weather, or July-August, which is drier here than most people expect and covers the Esala Perahera. Kandy sits between Sri Lanka's *two* monsoons and catches some of both, so it has no long dry season — but it also never has a season that is a write-off. See best time to visit Kandy.
Reserved seats open 30 days ahead and sell out within hours from December to March. Unreserved 2nd/3rd class is sold on the day and always available — you will stand, which is where the open doorways and the famous photographs are. Sit on the right-hand side going south.
