Minneriyas Stausee wurde im dritten Jahrhundert n. Chr. erbaut und ist der Grund fuer eines der grossartigsten Tierspektakel Asiens. Waehrend die Trockenzeit fortschreitet und das Wasser anderswo verschwindet, wird der Stauseeboden zu frischem Weideland, und Elefanten strömen aus dem umgebenden Wald darauf zu, einige hundert Tiere an einem Ort, fressend, badend und sozial interagierend. Es wird das Gathering genannt, und nichts anderes in Asien konzentriert wild lebende Elefanten so.

Das Timing zaehlt mehr als alles andere. Das Gathering baut sich waehrend der trockenen Monate auf, etwa von Juni bis September, und in der Regenzeit zerstreuen sich die Herden in den Wald und der Stausee ueberflutet. Welchen Park der Jeep nutzt, haengt davon ab, wo die Tiere diese Woche tatsaechlich sind: Minneriya, Kaudulla und der Hurulu-Oekopark liegen alle innerhalb einer halben Stunde voneinander, und Betreiber wechseln zwischen ihnen, weshalb die Buchung mehr als einen nennt.

Der Nachmittag ist die richtige Fahrzeit, die Elefanten kommen spaeter am Tag zum Wasser, und das Licht ist besser. Drei Stunden im Park mit einem Fahrer und Spurenleser, die ihn taeglich befahren.

Ein Weitertransfer nach Kandy oder anderswo kann ueblicherweise statt einer Rueckfahrt vereinbart werden, was dies zu einer guten Moeglichkeit macht, einen Transfertag aufzuteilen.
