Los lugares de interes de Ella son pocos, estan cerca unos de otros y son gratuitos, lo que los hace faciles de visitar mal. Todo lo que merece la pena aqui se hace mejor antes de las nueve de la mañana, las caminatas no estan señalizadas en algunos tramos, y el horario de los trenes es aspiracional. Un conductor-guia que conoce los horarios reales de tren del dia convierte una lista dispersa en una secuencia funcional.

El dia comienza en Little Adam's Peak con la primera luz, 45 minutos por un sendero escalonado para la vista a traves del Ella Gap, la razon por la que la mayoria de la gente pone esta ciudad en su lista. Bajada para el desayuno, luego el puente de los nueve arcos mientras se espera un tren: 91 metros de viaducto de piedra, 24 metros sobre un desfiladero, construido durante la Primera Guerra Mundial sin ningun acero porque el acero fue a Europa.

El bucle de Demodara es la parte que casi nadie ve. El ferrocarril traza un circulo completo por debajo de si mismo para ganar altitud, pasando bajo la estacion que acaba de dejar, y es una autentica curiosidad de ingenieria a pocos minutos en coche.

Un corto tramo en tren entre Demodara y Ella le pone en la via en lugar de solo verla. Las cascadas de Ravana, la cueva de Ravana y una tirolina sobre el valle llenan la tarde, y regresa antes del anochecer.

Ella es un pueblo a 1.040 metros en las montañas del sur, al que se llega en el tren desde Kandy que la mayoria considera el trayecto ferroviario mas bonito de Asia, y sus lugares de interes estan todos a pocos kilometros: el puente de los nueve arcos, un viaducto de ladrillo de 1921 en un desfiladero de te, que un tren cruza varias veces al dia; el Little Adam’s Peak, una caminata de 40 minutos entre te hasta una cresta; Ella Rock, una subida mas exigente de tres horas; y las cascadas de Ravana en la carretera hacia Wellawaya. Las mañanas son claras y las tardes de los meses humedos traen nubes al paso, por eso las caminatas se hacen temprano. Los tuk-tuks son el transporte, y cualquier alojamiento puede conseguir uno.
