Ella Rock es la caminata que necesita un guia, y aqui esta la razon: la ruta comienza junto a la via del tren desde la estacion de Ella, continua hacia el suroeste durante unos veinte minutos, y luego deja la linea en un cruce sin señal, varios caminos plausibles y solo una respuesta correcta. Desde alli atraviesa tierras de plantacion donde los senderos se bifurcan constantemente.

La gente se pierde en Ella Rock cada semana. Los lugareños aparecen en los cruces ofreciendo guiarle y luego piden dinero, lo cual a veces es util y a veces una estafa, y llegar sin guia ni mapa sin conexion es como los visitantes terminan vagando por las laderas de te durante cuatro horas.

La caminata en si no es tecnicamente dificil, tres horas de ida y vuelta, una larga subida por terreno irregular entre te y eucalipto, terminando en una cresta cumbre abierta con una amplia vista de vuelta sobre Ella y el Gap. Es una caminata considerablemente mejor que Little Adam's Peak y considerablemente mas dificil.

El resto del dia cubre los lugares mas faciles de la ciudad: un templo budista, el puente de los nueve arcos y las cascadas de Ravana, que no requieren ninguna navegacion.

Comience con la primera luz. La cresta esta expuesta, no hay sombra, y a media mañana hace calor.

Ella es un pueblo a 1.040 metros en las montañas del sur, al que se llega en el tren desde Kandy que la mayoria considera el trayecto ferroviario mas bonito de Asia, y sus lugares de interes estan todos a pocos kilometros: el puente de los nueve arcos, un viaducto de ladrillo de 1921 en un desfiladero de te, que un tren cruza varias veces al dia; el Little Adam’s Peak, una caminata de 40 minutos entre te hasta una cresta; Ella Rock, una subida mas exigente de tres horas; y las cascadas de Ravana en la carretera hacia Wellawaya. Las mañanas son claras y las tardes de los meses humedos traen nubes al paso, por eso las caminatas se hacen temprano. Los tuk-tuks son el transporte, y cualquier alojamiento puede conseguir uno.
