Arugam Bay es el pueblo surfista de Sri Lanka, en la costa este, y funciona con un calendario opuesto al resto de la ruta estandar: su temporada va aproximadamente de mayo a septiembre, justo cuando las costas oeste y sur son agitadas por el monzon del suroeste. Esa inversion es la razon por la que un itinerario de julio o agosto, que de otro modo seria un compromiso, puede ser un viaje muy bueno.

Llegar alli desde Ella toma unas cuatro horas de conduccion bajando el escarpe de Uva y saliendo a las tierras bajas secas, y la carretera pasa por varias cosas que merecen una parada.

Las cascadas de Ravana vienen primero, una amplia cascada debajo de Ella. Diyaluma, la segunda mas alta de Sri Lanka con 220 metros, sigue.

Buduruwagala es la parada que justifica la ruta. Siete figuras esculpidas en una pared rocosa en los siglos noveno o decimo, el Buda en pie central de dieciseis metros de altura, con restos del estuco y la pintura naranja originales todavia en la piedra. Es mahayana en lugar de theravada, lo cual es inusual aqui, y se encuentra en matorral seco casi sin nadie alrededor.

Un jardin de especias cerca de Wellawaya cubre canela, pimienta y las plantas ayurvedicas cultivadas en todos los pueblos de aqui. Llega a la costa por la tarde.

Ella es un pueblo a 1.040 metros en las montañas del sur, al que se llega en el tren desde Kandy que la mayoria considera el trayecto ferroviario mas bonito de Asia, y sus lugares de interes estan todos a pocos kilometros: el puente de los nueve arcos, un viaducto de ladrillo de 1921 en un desfiladero de te, que un tren cruza varias veces al dia; el Little Adam’s Peak, una caminata de 40 minutos entre te hasta una cresta; Ella Rock, una subida mas exigente de tres horas; y las cascadas de Ravana en la carretera hacia Wellawaya. Las mañanas son claras y las tardes de los meses humedos traen nubes al paso, por eso las caminatas se hacen temprano. Los tuk-tuks son el transporte, y cualquier alojamiento puede conseguir uno.

It was great and i really enjoy the activity, but it was to short for me. Going down out of the waterfall tooks just 10 minutes and i couldn’t go the second time. The driver was professional and very helpful.
