De Ella a Kandy normalmente se hace por la carretera de montaña a traves de Nuwara Eliya. Esta ruta va en el otro sentido, bajando la escarpa de Uva, cruzando la llanura hacia el este hasta Mahiyanganaya, y luego hacia el norte y oeste hasta Kandy, y es mas larga, mas tranquila, y considerablemente mas interesante.

Dambana es la razon. Los Vedda son el pueblo indigena de Sri Lanka, presentes en la isla mucho antes de la llegada cingalesa que las cronicas fechan en el siglo V a.C., y algunas comunidades permanecen en esta zona. Una visita significa conocer miembros de la comunidad, ver las tecnicas de caza y recoleccion que aun enseñan, y escuchar su propio relato de una historia casi siempre contada sobre ellos en lugar de por ellos.

El almuerzo casero es con una familia local en lugar de en un restaurante, y las cascadas en la ruta son las que la carretera principal se pierde por completo.

Catorce horas, asi que reservelo como el dia en si en lugar de como un traslado con extras.

Kandy fue la ultima capital de los reyes cingaleses, resistiendo a los portugueses y holandeses hasta que los britanicos la tomaron en 1815, y el templo de la reliquia del diente sagrado junto al lago es la razon de su importancia: la reliquia, considerada un diente de Buda, es el objeto mas sagrado de la isla y su custodia antes legitimaba la realeza. La camara de la reliquia abre para el puja tres veces al dia, aproximadamente a las 5:30, 9:30 y 18:30, cuando comienzan los tambores y la fila pasa junto al relicario. La vestimenta cubre hombros y rodillas, los zapatos se quitan en la entrada, y el Esala Perahera en julio o agosto desfila el relicario sobre un elefante por la ciudad durante diez noches.

January to March for the clearest Ella Gap views. June to September is dry but hazy from the Uva wind; October to December is wet. Do everything before nine in the morning. The Gap view is clearer in the morning in every month, Little Adam's Peak has a queue by nine, and the Nine Arch Bridge has hundreds of people on it by ten.
Time it for a puja — 5.30am, 9.30am or 6.30pm. Those are the only windows when the upper relic chamber opens and the hevisi drummers play; outside them you are visiting a beautiful building rather than a ceremony. February for the clearest weather, or July-August, which is drier here than most people expect and covers the Esala Perahera. Sigiriya and Dambulla (2.5 hrs each way) is the best of them. Kitulgala rafting is 2 hrs, the Knuckles range and Pekoe Trail stages are day hikes from here. Ella, Galle and Yala are *too far* — 4-6 hours each way. See day trips from Kandy.
