De Ella a Nuwara Eliya son solo unas dos horas de conduccion, lo que lo convierte en el movimiento mas facil en las montañas y el que mas vale la pena rellenar con paradas.

La carretera sube novecientos metros, y el caracter cambia con ella: Ella a mil metros es calida, algo desaliñada, y llena de caminantes, y Nuwara Eliya a 1.900 es fria, formal, y construida por los britanicos, con un hipodromo, un campo de golf, y una oficina de correos de estilo Tudor imitado.

El templo de Seetha Amman en Seetha Eliya es la primera parada propiamente dicha. Marca el valle donde se dice que Sita fue retenida por Ravana, y hay depresiones en la roca al otro lado del arroyo que se señalan como las huellas de Hanuman. Esta pintado de colores vivos en estilo del sur de India y frecuentado por peregrinos indios en lugar de turistas extranjeros, lo que le da una atmosfera muy diferente a la de los sitios budistas.

Hakgala, al lado, es el segundo de los grandes jardines botanicos de Sri Lanka despues de Peradeniya. Se trazo en 1861 para cultivar quina para la quinina y mas tarde te, y a 1.700 metros cultiva lo que las tierras bajas no pueden: rosas, helechos arborescentes, cipreses, y una gran coleccion de orquideas. Las urracas azules aqui se acercan a los visitantes.

El lago Gregory y el centro del pueblo cierran el dia.

Ella es un pueblo a 1.040 metros en las montañas del sur, alcanzado por el tren desde Kandy que la mayoria califica como el viaje ferroviario mas hermoso de Asia, y sus lugares de interes estan todos a pocos kilometros: el puente de los nueve arcos, un viaducto de ladrillo de 1921 en un desfiladero de te, que un tren cruza varias veces al dia; Little Adam's Peak, una caminata de 40 minutos a traves del te hasta una cresta; Ella Rock, una ascension mas dificil de tres horas; y las cascadas de Ravana en el camino hacia Wellawaya. Las mañanas son claras y las tardes en los meses humedos traen nubes al hueco, por lo que las caminatas se hacen temprano. Los tuk-tuks son el transporte, y toda pension puede encontrar uno.

Nanu Oya, about 10 km and a 20-30 minute drive from the town. Nuwara Eliya has no station of its own, and tuk-tuk fares at Nanu Oya rise sharply the moment a train arrives.
