Cada visitante de las montañas recorre una fabrica de te y ve a las maquinas hacer el trabajo. Muy pocos llegan a manipular la hoja alguna vez, y hacerlo cambia lo que significa la visita a la fabrica.

Esta sesion comienza en el campo. Usted recolecta la hoja usted mismo, dos hojas y un brote, que es el estandar y es mas dificil de hacer con consistencia de lo que parece. Los recolectores aqui trabajan con una cuota de peso diaria, casi todas mujeres, y diez minutos intentandolo son una rapida leccion sobre lo que ese trabajo realmente es.

Luego el proceso, a mano. La hoja se marchita en una bandeja en lugar de en una artesa, se enrolla entre las palmas hasta que las paredes celulares se rompen y los jugos salen a la superficie, se deja oxidar hasta que pasa de verde a cobrizo, y se seca. Es exactamente lo que una fabrica hace mecanicamente, a una escala que usted puede sostener en las manos.

La degustacion cubre cinco grados y es donde todo cobra sentido: habiendo elaborado usted mismo una pequeña cantidad, las diferencias entre un OP de hoja entera y un polvo que va a las bolsitas de te dejan de ser abstractas.

Bocados locales acompañan la degustacion, y un paseo por la plantacion completa la tarde. Los trayectos en tuk-tuk por los caminos sobre Ella forman parte de la experiencia.

Ella es un pueblo a 1.040 metros en las montañas del sur, al que se llega en el tren desde Kandy que la mayoria considera el trayecto ferroviario mas bonito de Asia, y sus lugares de interes estan todos a pocos kilometros: el puente de los nueve arcos, un viaducto de ladrillo de 1921 en un desfiladero de te, que un tren cruza varias veces al dia; el Little Adam’s Peak, una caminata de 40 minutos entre te hasta una cresta; Ella Rock, una subida mas exigente de tres horas; y las cascadas de Ravana en la carretera hacia Wellawaya. Las mañanas son claras y las tardes de los meses humedos traen nubes al paso, por eso las caminatas se hacen temprano. Los tuk-tuks son el transporte, y cualquier alojamiento puede conseguir uno.
