Haputale se encuentra a unos 1.430 metros sobre una cresta con la llanura extendiendose al sur, y Ella esta cuatrocientos metros mas abajo y treinta kilometros al este. Pedalear entre ambas es casi todo descenso, por lo que funciona como un dia para quienes no son ciclistas.

La ruta sigue carreteras de plantacion en lugar de la carretera principal. Son carreteras construidas para mover el te, apenas tienen trafico, y siguen las curvas de nivel de las colinas en lugar de subir, lo que significa que las vistas se abren mientras el esfuerzo se mantiene bajo.

Lo que se atraviesa es un paisaje de trabajo mas que pintoresco. Recolectores en las laderas por la mañana, viviendas donde familias de plantacion llevan generaciones viviendo, pequeñas fabricas, templos y tiendas de pueblo donde el paseo se detiene para un te.

Haputale misma merece el desvio. Es la menos visitada de las ciudades de montaña, su posicion en la cresta le da una vista que Nuwara Eliya no tiene, y Lipton’s Seat se encuentra encima.

Unos treinta kilometros en unas cuatro horas de trayecto, con paradas. Se proporcionan bicicletas y cascos, y el vehiculo sigue por si alguien quiere dejar de pedalear.

Ella es un pueblo a 1.040 metros en las montañas del sur, al que se llega en el tren desde Kandy que la mayoria considera el trayecto ferroviario mas bonito de Asia, y sus lugares de interes estan todos a pocos kilometros: el puente de los nueve arcos, un viaducto de ladrillo de 1921 en un desfiladero de te, que un tren cruza varias veces al dia; el Little Adam’s Peak, una caminata de 40 minutos entre te hasta una cresta; Ella Rock, una subida mas exigente de tres horas; y las cascadas de Ravana en la carretera hacia Wellawaya. Las mañanas son claras y las tardes de los meses humedos traen nubes al paso, por eso las caminatas se hacen temprano. Los tuk-tuks son el transporte, y cualquier alojamiento puede conseguir uno.
