Kalametiya es un sistema de lagunas y manglares costeros en la costa sur, a unas tres horas de Ella, y es uno de los mejores sitios de observacion de aves de Sri Lanka al que casi ningun visitante llega. Yala esta una hora al este y recibe toda la atencion.

El santuario abarca lagunas salobres, manglares, matorral, y un tramo de costa, y esa mezcla es la razon del alto numero de especies, mas de 150 registradas, incluyendo una gran afluencia migratoria entre aproximadamente noviembre y marzo. Aves limicolas en los bancos de lodo, garzas y garcetas en aguas poco profundas, cigüeñas pintadas, martines pescadores a lo largo de los canales, y rapaces en lo alto. Especies endemicas aparecen en el matorral detras.

El barco es un pequeño motor fuera de borda, el vehiculo adecuado: entra silenciosamente en canales de manglar que un jeep nunca podria alcanzar, y las aves se molestan considerablemente menos con un barco lento que con un vehiculo.

Cocodrilos, varanos, y en los manglares, nutrias ocasionales.

La mañana temprano es la ventana productiva, por eso el dia comienza antes del amanecer. Un guia con un catalejo hace una gran diferencia aqui, mucho de lo que vale la pena ver esta en el lado opuesto de una laguna.

Tranquilo, poco frecuentado, y para cualquiera que realmente ame las aves, mejor que un safari.

Ella es un pueblo a 1.040 metros en las montañas del sur, alcanzado por el tren desde Kandy que la mayoria califica como el viaje ferroviario mas hermoso de Asia, y sus lugares de interes estan todos a pocos kilometros: el puente de los nueve arcos, un viaducto de ladrillo de 1921 en un desfiladero de te, que un tren cruza varias veces al dia; Little Adam's Peak, una caminata de 40 minutos a traves del te hasta una cresta; Ella Rock, una ascension mas dificil de tres horas; y las cascadas de Ravana en el camino hacia Wellawaya. Las mañanas son claras y las tardes en los meses humedos traen nubes al hueco, por lo que las caminatas se hacen temprano. Los tuk-tuks son el transporte, y toda pension puede encontrar uno.
