La carretera de Dambatenne a Lipton's Seat sube unos siete kilometros en curvas continuas a traves de la plantacion. Subirla en bicicleta seria un serio trabajo matutino. Bajarla, tras haber subido en coche para el amanecer, es una de las mejores horas en bicicleta que ofrece Sri Lanka.

Lipton's Seat se encuentra a unos 1.970 metros. Thomas Lipton compro sus primeras plantaciones en Ceilan en 1890 y, segun cuenta la historia, subio a este espolon para observar lo que habia adquirido; hoy hay una estatua suya alli. En una mañana clara, la vista se extiende sobre cinco provincias hasta la llanura sur, y hacia las nueve o diez el valle se llena de nubes y ya no hay nada que ver, por lo que este viaje comienza antes del amanecer.

El descenso atraviesa la plantacion con te a ambos lados y recolectores que empiezan su trabajo a su paso. Es lo bastante empinado para necesitar frenos y lo bastante suave para no requerir pedalear.

Dambatenne, al pie, es la fabrica que construyo Lipton y una de las mas antiguas en funcionamiento del pais. La visita sigue la hoja desde la bandeja de marchitado, pasando por el enrollado, la oxidacion y el secado, hasta la mesa de clasificacion, y termina con una taza.

Regreso a Ella a primera hora de la tarde.

El te de Ceilan crece entre unos 600 y 2.000 metros en las tierras altas centrales, plantado por los britanicos a partir de la decada de 1860 despues de que una enfermedad destruyera el cultivo anterior de cafe, y las plantaciones aun funcionan en gran parte como entonces: los recolectores, en su mayoria mujeres tamiles, toman las dos hojas y un brote a mano, y la fabrica marchita, enrolla, fermenta y seca la hoja el mismo dia. Las visitas a la fabrica duran unos 45 minutos y terminan con una degustacion de los grados; las buenas son fabricas en funcionamiento en lugar de salas de exposicion. Lipton's Seat, sobre Haputale, es el mirador donde Thomas Lipton observaba sus plantaciones, mejor antes de que lleguen las nubes hacia las 10:00. Nuwara Eliya, a 1.868 metros, es la ciudad mas fria de la isla y requiere chaqueta por la noche.
