La carretera de Haputale hasta Lipton's Seat sube por la plantacion de Dambatenne por un camino estrecho de curvas continuas, y es uno de los pocos lugares donde un tuk-tuk es realmente el mejor vehiculo. Abierto por los lados, lento, y lo bastante cerca del te como para ver la recoleccion en las laderas junto a usted.

Lipton's Seat se encuentra a unos 1.970 metros. Thomas Lipton compro sus primeras plantaciones de Ceilan en 1890 y, segun cuenta la historia, subio a este espolon para contemplar todo lo que poseia. Hay una estatua suya en la cima, mirando hacia el horizonte. En una mañana clara, la vista se extiende sobre cinco provincias hasta la llanura sur.

La palabra clave es mañana. Las nubes suelen llenar el valle hacia las nueve o diez y no queda nada que ver, por lo que este es un viaje antes del amanecer y no una mañana para dormir hasta tarde.

Dambatenne, la fabrica que construyo Lipton, esta en el camino de regreso y es una de las mas antiguas en funcionamiento de Sri Lanka. La visita sigue la hoja desde la artesa de marchitado a traves del enrollado, la oxidacion y el secado hasta la mesa de clasificacion, y termina con una taza.

Cinco horas, de vuelta en Ella a media mañana.

Ella es un pueblo a 1.040 metros en las montañas del sur, al que se llega en el tren desde Kandy que la mayoria considera el trayecto ferroviario mas bonito de Asia, y sus lugares de interes estan todos a pocos kilometros: el puente de los nueve arcos, un viaducto de ladrillo de 1921 en un desfiladero de te, que un tren cruza varias veces al dia; el Little Adam’s Peak, una caminata de 40 minutos entre te hasta una cresta; Ella Rock, una subida mas exigente de tres horas; y las cascadas de Ravana en la carretera hacia Wellawaya. Las mañanas son claras y las tardes de los meses humedos traen nubes al paso, por eso las caminatas se hacen temprano. Los tuk-tuks son el transporte, y cualquier alojamiento puede conseguir uno.

We had a wonderful tour through the tea fields of Ella and to Lipton's Seat with Shad and his tuk-tuk. Shad let us experience the tea-making process. He showed us the plantations and stopped at a tea factory where we could watch the entire process from leaf to tea bag. Shad is a very pleasant guy, he drives carefully and even offered us a snack on the way back. Along the way, he stopped regularly to take beautiful photos of us. We had a great experience.
