El Pekoe Trail es una ruta señalizada de 300 kilometros a traves del pais del te de Sri Lanka, inaugurada en 2023 y construida casi por completo sobre senderos que ya existian: los caminos de plantacion, las sendas de recoleccion y los senderos que conectaban plantaciones antes de que hubiera carreteras entre ellas.

La etapa 16 es la ultima y la mas corta, bajando de Ella hasta la estacion de tren de Demodara. Deja la ciudad por la Reserva Forestal de Ella, un retazo de bosque remanente que casi ningun visitante pisa, y luego desciende por plantaciones de te hasta el puente de los nueve arcos, que el sendero atraviesa en lugar de solo visitar.

Esa es la diferencia con la excursion estandar al puente. Todos bajan desde la ciudad, fotografian el viaducto y vuelven a subir. La etapa 16 se acerca desde arriba por el sendero, lo cruza, y continua hasta Demodara, donde el ferrocarril traza un circulo completo por debajo de si mismo para ganar altitud.

Unas tres horas, mayormente en descenso, por terreno señalizado pero irregular. Es la introduccion mas facil que existe al Pekoe Trail y la que la mayoria puede hacer sin entrenamiento.

El tren de vuelta a Ella toma veinte minutos si prefiere no caminar el regreso.

Ella es un pueblo a 1.040 metros en las montañas del sur, al que se llega en el tren desde Kandy que la mayoria considera el trayecto ferroviario mas bonito de Asia, y sus lugares de interes estan todos a pocos kilometros: el puente de los nueve arcos, un viaducto de ladrillo de 1921 en un desfiladero de te, que un tren cruza varias veces al dia; el Little Adam’s Peak, una caminata de 40 minutos entre te hasta una cresta; Ella Rock, una subida mas exigente de tres horas; y las cascadas de Ravana en la carretera hacia Wellawaya. Las mañanas son claras y las tardes de los meses humedos traen nubes al paso, por eso las caminatas se hacen temprano. Los tuk-tuks son el transporte, y cualquier alojamiento puede conseguir uno.
