La ruta de Ella a Udawalawe desciende unos novecientos metros en unos treinta kilometros, y en bicicleta es uno de los descensos mas memorables de Sri Lanka. Tambien es un recorrido que casi nadie hace, porque la mayoria va en coche camino de un safari.

Las cascadas de Ravana abren el dia, una amplia caida de agua junto a la carretera justo debajo de Ella, llamada asi por el rey demonio del Ramayana que supuestamente escondio a Sita en las cuevas de arriba.

Luego llega el escarpe. La carretera desciende en curvas a traves del bosque y la maleza, y la temperatura sube unos quince grados mientras se pierde altitud, se sale con chaqueta y se termina en camisa. Bajo el escarpe, el paisaje se aplana en arrozales y pequenas parcelas, y el recorrido pasa de un descenso a un rodar tranquilo por pueblos donde nada esta preparado para los visitantes.

Un vehiculo de apoyo sigue todo el camino, algo que importa en una ruta con tanta pendiente: quien quiera dejar de pedalear puede hacerlo en cualquier momento.

Unos treinta y cinco kilometros en unas cuatro horas de trayecto. Como termina cerca de Udawalawe, se combina de forma natural con un safari esa misma tarde o a la mañana siguiente.

Ella es un pueblo a 1.040 metros en las montañas del sur, al que se llega en el tren desde Kandy que la mayoria considera el trayecto ferroviario mas bonito de Asia, y sus lugares de interes estan todos a pocos kilometros: el puente de los nueve arcos, un viaducto de ladrillo de 1921 en un desfiladero de te, que un tren cruza varias veces al dia; el Little Adam’s Peak, una caminata de 40 minutos entre te hasta una cresta; Ella Rock, una subida mas exigente de tres horas; y las cascadas de Ravana en la carretera hacia Wellawaya. Las mañanas son claras y las tardes de los meses humedos traen nubes al paso, por eso las caminatas se hacen temprano. Los tuk-tuks son el transporte, y cualquier alojamiento puede conseguir uno.
