Udawalawe esta a dos horas al sur de Ella y es el parque que elegir si quiere ver elefantes en lugar de apostar por un leopardo.

Se creo en 1972 para proteger la cuenca de un nuevo embalse, y las tierras agricolas desplazadas por el agua se convirtieron en pastizales abiertos. Esa es toda la razon por la que funciona: no hay donde un elefante pueda esconderse, los aproximadamente seiscientos animales residentes suelen estar a la vista dentro de los veinte minutos de la puerta, y los avistamientos son casi seguros en lugar de afortunados. Yala, una hora mas lejos, tiene los leopardos y trescientos jeeps junto a ellos.

Junto a los elefantes: bufalos de agua, ciervos moteados, chacales dorados, cocodrilos de pantano en el borde del embalse, y una observacion de aves genuinamente buena, aguilas serpentarias crestadas, aguilas-azor cambiantes, cigüeñas pintadas, y una fuerte migracion invernal.

El centro de transito de elefantes en el limite del parque es un centro de rehabilitacion en lugar de un orfanato, y la diferencia importa. Las crias huerfanas se crian con contacto humano minimo y se liberan de vuelta a la naturaleza en grupos; varias centenas han regresado. La alimentacion se observa desde una plataforma a distancia, sin montar, sin bañarse y sin contacto.

Ella es un pueblo a 1.040 metros en las montañas del sur, alcanzado por el tren desde Kandy que la mayoria califica como el viaje ferroviario mas hermoso de Asia, y sus lugares de interes estan todos a pocos kilometros: el puente de los nueve arcos, un viaducto de ladrillo de 1921 en un desfiladero de te, que un tren cruza varias veces al dia; Little Adam's Peak, una caminata de 40 minutos a traves del te hasta una cresta; Ella Rock, una ascension mas dificil de tres horas; y las cascadas de Ravana en el camino hacia Wellawaya. Las mañanas son claras y las tardes en los meses humedos traen nubes al hueco, por lo que las caminatas se hacen temprano. Los tuk-tuks son el transporte, y toda pension puede encontrar uno.
