Ella es una ciudad de mercado rodeada de una region agricola, y casi nadie que viene por las caminatas ve esa region. Este dia se sumerge en ella.

Los pueblos bajo el escarpe son tierra de arrozales y pequeñas parcelas, trabajadas por familias en lugar de plantaciones. Se sale en jeep y luego en carreta de bueyes, que es como realmente se movian las mercancias aqui hasta hace poco, y es lento, agitado y revelador.

El riego es la parte que merece atencion. El sistema de embalses y canales que riega estas tierras es la misma tecnologia que Sri Lanka ha usado durante dos mil años: un embalse, una red de canales y un orden a nivel de pueblo que decide que campo recibe agua y cuando. Que se lo explique alguien que cultiva con el es muy distinto de leerlo en un libro.

La cocina es el centro del dia. El arroz con curry son seis o siete platos separados cocinados individualmente y comidos juntos, y usted participa: rallar coco en un hiramanaya, molturar la pasta de especias en una piedra, cocinar en ollas de barro sobre fuego de leña. Luego se sienta a comer con la familia que le ayudo a prepararlo.

Los viajeros clasifican sistematicamente dias como este por encima de los lugares mas conocidos, y tienen razon.

Ella es un pueblo a 1.040 metros en las montañas del sur, al que se llega en el tren desde Kandy que la mayoria considera el trayecto ferroviario mas bonito de Asia, y sus lugares de interes estan todos a pocos kilometros: el puente de los nueve arcos, un viaducto de ladrillo de 1921 en un desfiladero de te, que un tren cruza varias veces al dia; el Little Adam’s Peak, una caminata de 40 minutos entre te hasta una cresta; Ella Rock, una subida mas exigente de tres horas; y las cascadas de Ravana en la carretera hacia Wellawaya. Las mañanas son claras y las tardes de los meses humedos traen nubes al paso, por eso las caminatas se hacen temprano. Los tuk-tuks son el transporte, y cualquier alojamiento puede conseguir uno.
