Tenga en cuenta antes de reservar: el Departamento de Conservacion de la Vida Silvestre ha cerrado los Bloques 1 y 2 del parque nacional de Yala del 14 de septiembre al 15 de octubre de 2026 debido a la sequia, por lo que los safaris en esos bloques no pueden realizarse en esas fechas. Los Bloques 3 a 6 permanecen abiertos, y Udawalawe y Wilpattu no se ven afectados, para viajes dentro de ese periodo lo contactaremos para trasladar el safari a uno de esos parques o a una fecha posterior al 15 de octubre. Udawalawe es el parque mas fuerte para elefantes; Wilpattu tiene avistamientos de leopardos mas tranquilos.

Arugam Bay funciona en un calendario opuesto al resto de la ruta estandar de Sri Lanka. Su temporada es aproximadamente de mayo a septiembre, exactamente cuando el monzon del suroeste agita las costas sur y oeste, lo que la convierte en el destino adecuado para un viaje de verano europeo que de otro modo seria un compromiso.

Llegar alli desde Ella significa cruzar el sureste, y Yala esta en el camino. Eso hace que el dia de traslado sea el momento sensato para el parque en lugar de un viaje de ida y vuelta.

El Bloque 1 tiene la densidad mas alta registrada de leopardos en cualquier lugar de la tierra, junto con osos perezosos, elefantes, bufalos de agua, cocodrilos, y mas de doscientas especies de aves. En una mañana ocupada de temporada tambien tiene alrededor de trescientos jeeps; ambas cosas son verdad.

El paseo al amanecer es el unico que vale la pena, los animales se mueven con la primera luz y se refugian hacia las nueve.

Despues del parque, la carretera sube por la costa hacia el norte pasando por Panama hacia Arugam Bay y Pottuvil, y el paisaje cambia a matorral seco, lagunas, y playas largas y vacias. El extremo final de este tramo limita con el parque nacional de Kumana, una de las mejores zonas de observacion de aves del pais y casi nunca visitada.

Fuera de la temporada de surf, gran parte de Arugam Bay cierra y las olas se aplanan, asi que verifique sus fechas antes de reservar.
