Tenga en cuenta antes de reservar: el Departamento de Conservacion de la Vida Silvestre ha cerrado los Bloques 1 y 2 del parque nacional de Yala del 14 de septiembre al 15 de octubre de 2026 debido a la sequia, por lo que los safaris en esos bloques no pueden realizarse en esas fechas. Los Bloques 3 a 6 permanecen abiertos, y Udawalawe y Wilpattu no se ven afectados, para viajes dentro de ese periodo lo contactaremos para trasladar el safari a uno de esos parques o a una fecha posterior al 15 de octubre. Udawalawe es el parque mas fuerte para elefantes; Wilpattu tiene avistamientos de leopardos mas tranquilos.

La mayoria de la gente deja la zona de Yala por la mañana despues de un paseo de safari al amanecer y se dirige hacia las colinas, y la subida por la escarpa son tres horas de poco si se hace directamente.

Etili es un pueblo agricola en el camino, en el campo entre la llanura y la escarpa, y detenerse alli convierte el traslado en la mitad mas memorable del dia.

Lo que ocurre es sencillo: conoce a una familia, cocina con ella, y come lo que preparo. El arroz y curry son seis o siete platos separados cocinados individualmente y comidos juntos, y participar significa rallar coco en un hiramanaya, moler la pasta de especias en una piedra, y cocinar en ollas de barro sobre un fuego de leña que no se comporta en nada como una estufa de gas.

Alrededor de eso esta el pueblo mismo, arrozales, pequeñas fincas, el embalse que los riega, y el negocio ordinario de un lugar que no esta en ningun itinerario.

Luego el ascenso, que es cuando el dia cambia de caracter: de calor seco de tierras bajas a laderas de te a mil metros en poco mas de una hora, y unos quince grados mas fresco al llegar a Ella.

Unas cinco horas en total, llegando por la tarde con su primera mañana en Ella libre.
