Si de todos modos se traslada de Kandy a Ella, y en casi todos los itinerarios de Sri Lanka lo hace, esta es la forma sensata de hacerlo. En lugar de pagar por separado un traslado y luego hacer una excursion de vuelta a los mismos lugares, el trayecto se convierte en el turismo.

La ruta comienza en el Jardin Botanico Real de Peradeniya, 60 hectareas en un meandro del rio Mahaweli con una avenida de palmeras, una casa de orquideas y un higo de Java que da sombra a la mayor parte de un cesped. Luego comienza la subida, por Gampola y Pussellawa, con una parada en un jardin de especias donde canela, cardamomo, pimienta y vainilla crecen en la misma parcela.

Las cascadas de Ramboda marcan la mitad del camino, una caida de 100 metros a poca distancia a pie de la carretera, y encima el campo se vuelve completamente te. Sigue una visita a una fabrica en funcionamiento que lleva la hoja a traves del marchitado, el enrollado, la oxidacion y el secado hasta la mesa de clasificacion.

Nuwara Eliya viene despues, la estacion de montaña a 1.900 metros, con el hipodromo y el aire frio, y luego el descenso a Ella, donde le dejan en su hotel con su equipaje, habiendo visto todo lo que hay entre las dos ciudades en lugar de pasarlo de largo en coche.

Kandy fue la ultima capital de los reyes cingaleses, resistiendo a portugueses y holandeses hasta que los britanicos la tomaron en 1815, y el Templo de la Sagrada Reliquia del Diente junto al lago es la razon de su importancia: la reliquia, considerada un diente de Buda, es el objeto mas sagrado de la isla y su custodia legitimaba antiguamente la realeza. La camara de la reliquia abre para puja tres veces al dia, aproximadamente a las 5:30, 9:30 y 18:30, cuando comienzan los tambores y la fila pasa junto al relicario. La vestimenta cubre hombros y rodillas, los zapatos se quitan en la entrada, y el Esala Perahera en julio o agosto pasea el relicario sobre un elefante por la ciudad durante diez noches.

The transfer got us from Kandy to Ella. The reason for the 3/5 is the tour guide was supposed to be English speaking but didn't really seem to know much.

January to March for the clearest Ella Gap views. June to September is dry but hazy from the Uva wind; October to December is wet. Do everything before nine in the morning. The Gap view is clearer in the morning in every month, Little Adam's Peak has a queue by nine, and the Nine Arch Bridge has hundreds of people on it by ten.
Time it for a puja — 5.30am, 9.30am or 6.30pm. Those are the only windows when the upper relic chamber opens and the hevisi drummers play; outside them you are visiting a beautiful building rather than a ceremony. February for the clearest weather, or July-August, which is drier here than most people expect and covers the Esala Perahera. Kandy sits between Sri Lanka's *two* monsoons and catches some of both, so it has no long dry season — but it also never has a season that is a write-off. See best time to visit Kandy.

Sigiriya and Dambulla (2.5 hrs each way) is the best of them. Kitulgala rafting is 2 hrs, the Knuckles range and Pekoe Trail stages are day hikes from here. Ella, Galle and Yala are *too far* — 4-6 hours each way. See day trips from Kandy.
