La cordillera de Knuckles debe su nombre a como sus picos parecen un puño cerrado desde Kandy, y es uno de los pocos lugares de Sri Lanka donde se puede caminar un dia sin encontrar un grupo turistico. Es una zona protegida declarada por la UNESCO que alberga bosque de niebla de altitud, pastizales de patana y especies que no existen en ningun otro lugar, la cordillera se encuentra en el punto de encuentro de las zonas humeda y seca, por lo que la vegetacion cambia tan bruscamente al cruzarla.

La caminata sube por te y bosque secundario hasta el bosque mas antiguo de arriba, donde los arboles llevan musgo y epifitas y las nubes se posan en el dosel durante gran parte de la mañana. La observacion de aves aqui es buena y las especies endemicas son genuinamente encontrables: bulbul de orejas amarillas, anteojito de Sri Lanka, papamoscas azul oscuro.

Perumal Ella es el punto de retorno, una cascada con una poza en la base lo bastante fria para ser un shock y lo bastante poco profunda para sentarse en ella. La mayoria de los grupos se detienen aqui una hora.

El almuerzo es en una granja de la cordillera, arroz con curry, cocinado alli, comido alli. El regreso sigue una ruta distinta de vuelta por los pueblos, asi que no se repite el camino de la mañana.

Kandy fue la ultima capital de los reyes cingaleses, resistiendo a portugueses y holandeses hasta que los britanicos la tomaron en 1815, y el Templo de la Sagrada Reliquia del Diente junto al lago es la razon de su importancia: la reliquia, considerada un diente de Buda, es el objeto mas sagrado de la isla y su custodia legitimaba antiguamente la realeza. La camara de la reliquia abre para puja tres veces al dia, aproximadamente a las 5:30, 9:30 y 18:30, cuando comienzan los tambores y la fila pasa junto al relicario. La vestimenta cubre hombros y rodillas, los zapatos se quitan en la entrada, y el Esala Perahera en julio o agosto pasea el relicario sobre un elefante por la ciudad durante diez noches.

A great combined experience of Sri Lankan mountain village life and a good mountain hike. The pick up was smooth and the guides were very friendly, attentive and local. The cooking experience was great fun and the lunch prepared by the host was excellent. The hike itself was great, rising above the rice paddies into montane forest, with an invigorating waterfall swimming spot towards the end. We enjoyed communicating with our affable guide despite the language differences and also experiencing their local knowledge in a slightly extended walk.

Notre guide était très attentionné et nous a donné pleins d’informations tout le long du trajet, nous avons pu préparer et manger un plat typique chez une habitante de sa famille et nous avons également déjeuné chez une autre personne, c’était très bon La baignade dans la rivière près de la cascade était top, après avoir bien transpiré

Reserved seats open 30 days ahead and sell out within hours from December to March. Unreserved 2nd/3rd class is sold on the day and always available — you will stand, which is where the open doorways and the famous photographs are. Sit on the right-hand side going south.
