Meemure se encuentra en un valle dentro de la cordillera de Knuckles, rodeado de picos, y hasta los años 1990 la unica forma de llegar era un sendero. Recibio electricidad de red en 2016. Ese aislamiento es la razon por la que merece la pena el trayecto: el pueblo todavia cultiva como siempre se ha cultivado el valle, y las casas, las terrazas de arroz y el ritmo diario no estan preparados para los visitantes.

La carretera hasta alli es la primera parte del dia, unas tres horas desde Kandy, la ultima hora lo bastante dificil para que el ultimo tramo normalmente se haga en jeep. Pasa por el bosque protegido de Knuckles, una cordillera declarada por la UNESCO de bosque de niebla y pastizal que alberga especies que no existen en ningun otro lugar.

En el pueblo camina: por las terrazas de arroz, pasando la escuela, y hasta la cascada de Diyakarella, unas dos horas de ida y vuelta por un sendero forestal con una poza al fondo en la que puede nadar. La caminata es moderada en lugar de dificil, pero es irregular y resbaladiza cuando esta humeda.

El almuerzo se cocina en el pueblo, arroz con curry, sobre fuego de leña, comido donde se preparo. Luego el largo camino de vuelta, llegando a Kandy por la noche.

Kandy fue la ultima capital de los reyes cingaleses, resistiendo a portugueses y holandeses hasta que los britanicos la tomaron en 1815, y el Templo de la Sagrada Reliquia del Diente junto al lago es la razon de su importancia: la reliquia, considerada un diente de Buda, es el objeto mas sagrado de la isla y su custodia legitimaba antiguamente la realeza. La camara de la reliquia abre para puja tres veces al dia, aproximadamente a las 5:30, 9:30 y 18:30, cuando comienzan los tambores y la fila pasa junto al relicario. La vestimenta cubre hombros y rodillas, los zapatos se quitan en la entrada, y el Esala Perahera en julio o agosto pasea el relicario sobre un elefante por la ciudad durante diez noches.

January to March for the clearest Ella Gap views. June to September is dry but hazy from the Uva wind; October to December is wet. Do everything before nine in the morning. The Gap view is clearer in the morning in every month, Little Adam's Peak has a queue by nine, and the Nine Arch Bridge has hundreds of people on it by ten.
Time it for a puja — 5.30am, 9.30am or 6.30pm. Those are the only windows when the upper relic chamber opens and the hevisi drummers play; outside them you are visiting a beautiful building rather than a ceremony. February for the clearest weather, or July-August, which is drier here than most people expect and covers the Esala Perahera.
