El Pekoe Trail es una ruta señalizada de 300 kilometros a traves del pais del te de Sri Lanka, inaugurada en 2023 y construida casi por completo sobre senderos que ya existian: los caminos de plantacion, las sendas de recoleccion y los senderos que conectaban las plantaciones antes de que hubiera carreteras entre ellas.

La etapa 3 comienza en Loolkandura, donde empezo toda la industria. James Taylor planto aqui el primer te comercial de Ceilan en 1867 en 19 acres, tras que la plaga del cafe destruyera el cultivo anterior de la isla. Los cimientos de su bungalow y el sitio de la fabrica original todavia estan en la plantacion, y el te que crece alrededor desciende de aquellas plantaciones.

Desde alli el sendero va hacia Tawalantenne siguiendo las curvas de nivel, que es el placer de caminar por el pais del te, los senderos siguen la ladera en lugar de subir por encima, por lo que el esfuerzo se mantiene moderado mientras las vistas se abren. Se atraviesan plantaciones en funcionamiento con recolectores trabajando, viviendas donde familias de plantacion llevan generaciones viviendo, y crestas con la cordillera de Knuckles al otro lado del valle.

Un guia importa en esta etapa: la historia es invisible sin uno, y los senderos de plantacion se bifurcan constantemente.

Kandy fue la ultima capital de los reyes cingaleses, resistiendo a portugueses y holandeses hasta que los britanicos la tomaron en 1815, y el Templo de la Sagrada Reliquia del Diente junto al lago es la razon de su importancia: la reliquia, considerada un diente de Buda, es el objeto mas sagrado de la isla y su custodia legitimaba antiguamente la realeza. La camara de la reliquia abre para puja tres veces al dia, aproximadamente a las 5:30, 9:30 y 18:30, cuando comienzan los tambores y la fila pasa junto al relicario. La vestimenta cubre hombros y rodillas, los zapatos se quitan en la entrada, y el Esala Perahera en julio o agosto pasea el relicario sobre un elefante por la ciudad durante diez noches.

Time it for a puja — 5.30am, 9.30am or 6.30pm. Those are the only windows when the upper relic chamber opens and the hevisi drummers play; outside them you are visiting a beautiful building rather than a ceremony. Reserved seats open 30 days ahead and sell out within hours from December to March. Unreserved 2nd/3rd class is sold on the day and always available — you will stand, which is where the open doorways and the famous photographs are. Sit on the right-hand side going south.
