La mayoria de los tours de la ciudad de Kandy se quedan en la carretera circular y visitan las mismas cuatro paradas. Este sube primero, a Wakarewatta en las colinas sobre la ciudad, donde el bosque y el te llegan hasta la carretera y los miradores miran directamente al lago y los tejados del templo.

Un tuk-tuk es el vehiculo adecuado para ello, las carreteras que suben son estrechas, empinadas y llenas de curvas cerradas, y estar abierto por los lados a esa altitud es la mayor parte del placer. Su conductor es tambien el guia, lo que en Kandy suele significar alguien genuinamente local que se detendra donde valga la pena hacerlo.

El almuerzo es un arroz con curry de verdad, seis o siete platos servidos juntos en lugar de uno, en un lugar local en lugar de un restaurante turistico.

La tarde vuelve a bajar a la ciudad: el Templo del Diente desde fuera o dentro, la orilla del lago, el mercado, y el Buda de Bahirawakanda en la colina si hay tiempo. Es medio dia que cubre tanto el Kandy tranquilo como el animado, que es mas de lo que logran la mayoria de los tours de dia completo.

Si el Templo del Diente esta en su lista, el codigo de vestimenta se aplica: hombros y rodillas cubiertos para todos, y zapatos y sombreros se quitan en la entrada. La camara de la reliquia en si solo abre durante las tres pujas diarias, y la fila en esos momentos es larga, su conductor sabra cual se ajusta mejor a su dia. El resto de la ruta no tiene restricciones.

Time it for a puja — 5.30am, 9.30am or 6.30pm. Those are the only windows when the upper relic chamber opens and the hevisi drummers play; outside them you are visiting a beautiful building rather than a ceremony. Reserved seats open 30 days ahead and sell out within hours from December to March. Unreserved 2nd/3rd class is sold on the day and always available — you will stand, which is where the open doorways and the famous photographs are. Sit on the right-hand side going south. Sigiriya and Dambulla (2.5 hrs each way) is the best of them. Kitulgala rafting is 2 hrs, the Knuckles range and Pekoe Trail stages are day hikes from here. Ella, Galle and Yala are *too far* — 4-6 hours each way. See day trips from Kandy.
