El embalse de Minneriya se construyo en el siglo tercero d.C. y es la razon de uno de los grandes espectaculos de vida silvestre de Asia. A medida que avanza la temporada seca y el agua desaparece en otros lugares, el lecho del embalse se convierte en pasto fresco, y los elefantes convergen en el desde todo el bosque circundante, unos cientos de animales en un lugar, alimentandose, bañandose y socializando. Se llama la Reunion, y nada mas en Asia concentra elefantes salvajes asi.

El momento importa mas que cualquier otra cosa. La Reunion se intensifica durante los meses secos, aproximadamente de junio a septiembre, y en la temporada de lluvias las manadas se dispersan en el bosque y el embalse se inunda. Que parque use el jeep depende de donde esten realmente los animales esa semana: Minneriya, Kaudulla y el Parque Ecologico Hurulu estan todos a media hora entre si y los operadores se mueven entre ellos, por lo que la reserva nombra mas de uno.

La tarde es el momento adecuado para la salida, los elefantes bajan al agua a ultima hora del dia, y la luz es mejor. Tres horas en el parque con un conductor y rastreador que lo recorren a diario.
