The 5:30 pickup felt brutal until we were sitting in the boat watching the sun come up over the Ganges with the ghats waking up around us. Our guide narrated every ritual quietly and never rushed us. We took the Sarnath option and it was the right call. The morning at the river and temple was intense and beautiful, then Sarnath in the afternoon was calm and completely different in mood. Having the private AC car between everything made the whole day comfortable even in the heat. Our guide's knowledge of Buddhist history was genuinely impressive.

A wonderful and moving experience overall. The only honest downside was how crowded the old-city lanes got approaching the temple, and the queue for the sanctum took longer than expected. Our guide handled it patiently and warned us in advance, so it never spoiled things. The sunrise boat ride alone was worth the early alarm. Wear proper shoes for those alleyways.
