We took the Sarnath option and it was the right call. The morning at the river and temple was intense and beautiful, then Sarnath in the afternoon was calm and completely different in mood. A wonderful and moving experience overall. The only honest downside was how crowded the old-city lanes got approaching the temple, and the queue for the sanctum took longer than expected. Our guide handled it patiently and warned us in advance, so it never spoiled things. The sunrise boat ride alone was worth the early alarm. Wear proper shoes for those alleyways.
