Ella a Kandy se fait generalement par la route de montagne via Nuwara Eliya. Cet itineraire prend l'autre sens, descendant l'escarpement d'Uva, traversant la plaine vers l'est jusqu'a Mahiyanganaya, puis remontant au nord et a l'ouest vers Kandy, et c'est plus long, plus calme, et considerablement plus interessant.

Dambana en est la raison. Les Vedda sont le peuple indigene du Sri Lanka, present sur l'ile bien avant l'arrivee cinghalaise que les chroniques datent du cinquieme siecle avant notre ere, et quelques communautes subsistent dans cette region. Une visite signifie rencontrer des membres de la communaute, voir les techniques de chasse et de cueillette qu'ils enseignent encore, et entendre leur propre recit d'une histoire presque toujours racontee a leur sujet plutot que par eux.

Soyez clair sur ce que c'est: un gagne-pain, et mis en scene dans une certaine mesure. La communaute controle la presentation et l'argent reste local, ce qui est l'argument honnete pour y aller. Quiconque le presente comme une rencontre avec des gens non touches par le monde moderne ne dit pas la verite.

Le dejeuner fait maison se prend avec une famille locale plutot qu'au restaurant, et les cascades sur l'itineraire sont celles que la route principale manque completement.

Quatorze heures, donc reservez-le comme la journee elle-meme plutot que comme un transfert avec des extras.

Kandy fut la derniere capitale des rois cinghalais, resistant aux Portugais et aux Hollandais jusqu'a ce que les Britanniques la prennent en 1815, et le temple de la relique de la dent sacree au bord du lac en fait son importance: la relique, consideree comme une dent du Bouddha, est l'objet le plus sacre de l'ile et sa garde legitimait autrefois la royaute. La chambre de la relique ouvre pour le puja trois fois par jour, vers 5h30, 9h30 et 18h30, quand les tambours commencent et que la file passe devant le coffret. Les tenues couvrent les epaules et les genoux, les chaussures se retirent a l'entree, et l'Esala Perahera en juillet ou aout parade le coffret sur un elephant a travers la ville pendant dix nuits.

January to March for the clearest Ella Gap views. June to September is dry but hazy from the Uva wind; October to December is wet. Do everything before nine in the morning. The Gap view is clearer in the morning in every month, Little Adam's Peak has a queue by nine, and the Nine Arch Bridge has hundreds of people on it by ten.
Time it for a puja — 5.30am, 9.30am or 6.30pm. Those are the only windows when the upper relic chamber opens and the hevisi drummers play; outside them you are visiting a beautiful building rather than a ceremony. February for the clearest weather, or July-August, which is drier here than most people expect and covers the Esala Perahera. Kandy sits between Sri Lanka's *two* monsoons and catches some of both, so it has no long dry season — but it also never has a season that is a write-off. See best time to visit Kandy.

Sigiriya and Dambulla (2.5 hrs each way) is the best of them. Kitulgala rafting is 2 hrs, the Knuckles range and Pekoe Trail stages are day hikes from here. Ella, Galle and Yala are *too far* — 4-6 hours each way. See day trips from Kandy.
