D'Ella a Nuwara Eliya, il n'y a qu'environ deux heures de conduite, ce qui en fait le trajet le plus facile des montagnes et celui qui merite le plus d'etre agremente d'arrets.

La route monte de neuf cents metres, et le caractere change avec elle: Ella a mille metres est chaude, un peu brute, et pleine de randonneurs, et Nuwara Eliya a 1 900 metres est froide, formelle et construite par les Britanniques, avec un hippodrome, un terrain de golf, et un bureau de poste de style Tudor factice.

Le temple de Seetha Amman a Seetha Eliya est le premier arret veritable. Il marque la vallee ou Sita aurait ete retenue par Ravana, et il y a des depressions dans la roche de l'autre cote du ruisseau que l'on designe comme les empreintes de pas de Hanuman. Il est peint de couleurs vives dans le style sud-indien et frequente par des pelerins indiens plutot que des touristes etrangers, ce qui lui donne une atmosphere tres differente des sites bouddhistes.

Hakgala, juste a cote, est le deuxieme des grands jardins botaniques du Sri Lanka apres Peradeniya.
