Tissamaharama, Tissa pour tous ceux qui y vont, est la ville qui sert le parc national de Yala, et la plupart des gens arrivent la veille d'un safari a l'aube. Y arriver depuis Ella prend environ trois heures de route, et la route descend de l'escarpement d'Uva a travers l'un des plus beaux paysages du sud.

Les cascades de Ravana sont le premier arret, une large cascade de 25 metres au bord de la route en dessous d'Ella. Diyaluma suit, la deuxieme plus haute du Sri Lanka a 220 metres, visible en entier depuis le bord de la route.

Buduruwagala est la raison de prendre cet itineraire plutot que le direct. Sept figures taillees dans une paroi rocheuse aux neuvieme ou dixieme siecles, le bouddha debout central mesurant seize metres, avec des traces du stuc et de la peinture orange d'origine encore visibles sur la pierre. C'est un site mahayana, rare dans un pays theravada, et il se dresse dans des broussailles seches presque sans personne.
