Kalametiya est un systeme de lagons et mangroves cotiers sur la cote sud, a environ trois heures d'Ella, et c'est l'un des meilleurs sites d'observation des oiseaux du Sri Lanka que presque aucun visiteur n'atteint. Yala est a une heure a l'est et capte toute l'attention.

Le sanctuaire couvre des lagons saumatres, des mangroves, des broussailles et un tronçon de cote, et c'est ce melange qui explique le nombre eleve d'especes, plus de 150 recensees, dont un afflux migratoire important entre environ novembre et mars. Des oiseaux de rivage sur les vasieres, des herons et aigrettes dans les eaux peu profondes, des cigognes peintes, des martins-pecheurs le long des chenaux, et des rapaces au-dessus. Des especes endemiques apparaissent dans les broussailles a l'arriere.

Le bateau est un petit hors-bord, ce qui est le bon vehicule: il penetre silencieusement dans des chenaux de mangrove qu'une jeep ne pourrait jamais atteindre, et les oiseaux sont bien moins deranges par un bateau lent que par un vehicule.

Le debut de matinee est la fenetre la plus productive, c'est pourquoi la journee commence avant l'aube. Un guide avec une lunette fait une grande difference ici, une grande partie de ce qui merite d'etre vu se trouve de l'autre cote d'un lagon.

Tranquille, peu frequente, et pour quiconque aime vraiment les oiseaux, meilleure qu'un safari.

Ella est un village a 1 040 metres dans les montagnes du sud, atteint par le train depuis Kandy que la plupart des gens considerent comme le plus beau trajet ferroviaire d'Asie, et ses sites sont tous a quelques kilometres: le pont aux neuf arches, un viaduc en brique de 1921 dans une gorge de the, qu'un train traverse plusieurs fois par jour; le Little Adam's Peak, une marche de 40 minutes a travers le the jusqu'a une crete; Ella Rock, une ascension plus difficile de trois heures; et les cascades de Ravana sur la route vers Wellawaya.
