A noter avant de reserver: le Departement de la conservation de la faune a ferme les blocs 1 et 2 du parc national de Yala du 14 septembre au 15 octobre 2026 en raison de la secheresse, donc les safaris dans ces blocs ne peuvent pas avoir lieu a ces dates. Les blocs 3 a 6 restent ouverts, et Udawalawe et Wilpattu ne sont pas affectes, pour un voyage dans cette periode nous vous contacterons pour deplacer le safari vers l'un de ces parcs ou a une date apres le 15 octobre. Udawalawe est le parc le plus fort pour les elephants; Wilpattu offre des observations de leopards plus tranquilles.

Yala se trouve entre la cote sud-ouest et les montagnes, ce qui en fait l'arret naturel sur une journee de transfert plutot qu'un aller-retour depuis l'une ou l'autre extremite.

Le safari vient en premier et doit se faire a l'aube, les animaux bougent a la premiere lumiere et s'abritent vers neuf heures, et vers onze heures le parc n'est plus que chaleur et jeeps. Le bloc 1 detient la plus forte densite enregistree de leopards sur Terre et, par une matinee animee en haute saison, environ trois cents vehicules. Les deux faits meritent d'etre reserves les yeux ouverts.

Au-dela des leopards, il y a des ours paresseux, plus difficiles a trouver et meilleurs quand on les trouve, des elephants, des buffles d'eau, des crocodiles marins et plus de deux cents especes d'oiseaux avec une forte migration hivernale.

Apres le parc, la route tourne vers le nord et commence a grimper. Buduruwagala est l'arret sur la montee: sept figures sculptees dans une paroi rocheuse aux neuvieme ou dixieme siecles, le bouddha debout central mesurant seize metres, avec des traces du stuc et de la peinture orange d'origine encore visibles sur la pierre. C'est un site mahayana dans un pays theravada et il est presque toujours vide.

Puis l'escarpement, et Ella en soiree, quinze degres plus frais que la plage que vous avez quittee.
