A noter avant de reserver: le Departement de la conservation de la faune a ferme les blocs 1 et 2 du parc national de Yala du 14 septembre au 15 octobre 2026 en raison de la secheresse, donc les safaris dans ces blocs ne peuvent pas avoir lieu a ces dates. Les blocs 3 a 6 restent ouverts, et Udawalawe et Wilpattu ne sont pas affectes, pour un voyage dans cette periode nous vous contacterons pour deplacer le safari vers l'un de ces parcs ou a une date apres le 15 octobre. Udawalawe est le parc le plus fort pour les elephants; Wilpattu offre des observations de leopards plus tranquilles.

Yala se trouve a environ trois heures au sud d'Ella, en descendant l'escarpement d'Uva et en sortant sur la plaine cotiere seche, et le changement de paysage sur ce trajet est l'un des plus spectaculaires du Sri Lanka: des pentes de the a mille metres jusqu'aux broussailles epineuses au niveau de la mer en moins de trois heures.

Le bloc 1, la section ouverte a la plupart des visiteurs, detient la plus forte densite enregistree de leopards au monde. C'est une vraie statistique, et la foule qu'elle attire aussi, trois cents jeeps par une matinee animee en haute saison, convergeant chaque fois qu'une observation est annoncee par radio.

Le parc recompense un interet plus large. Les ours paresseux sont plus difficiles a trouver que les leopards et meilleurs quand on les trouve. Elephants, buffles d'eau, crocodiles marins aux points d'eau, et plus de deux cents especes d'oiseaux, dont une forte migration hivernale depuis le nord.

Le safari a l'aube est le seul qui vaut la peine. Les animaux bougent a la premiere lumiere et s'abritent vers neuf heures, et vers onze heures le parc n'est que chaleur et vehicules.

Les cascades de Ravana s'inserent dans la montee de retour vers les montagnes, ce qui est un usage raisonnable de la derniere heure d'une longue journee.

Le bloc 1 de Yala ferme pendant environ un mois chaque septembre.
